Curaçao

We’re island-hopping mon!

Today we are in Curaçao (pronounced Cure-ah-souw). Curaçao is 17 miles north of Venezuela, and is a part of the Dutch Kingdom. It consists of two islands and has a population of 158,000. Karen and I enjoyed the rich culture of its capital, the charming Willemstad.

We also really liked the Chichi doll statues found throughout the town. Don’t worry! Chichi means “oldest sister” in the native Papiamentu languag  (a Creole blend of African, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, French, English, and Arawak Indian.)

And the beautiful neo-classical architecture.

We especially enjoyed the floating market, and the Saint Emma bridge. (“Emma” was Karen’s mother’s name).

When we got about half-way across the bridge, the alarm went off, indication the “draw-bridge” was going to open. It’s a big bridge, and try as we might, we could not get off in time! It turns out that this “draw-bridge” does not go up, but instead rotates sideways. So we were on the bridge when it rotated to let a boat pass. 10 minutes later, we were on our way again…

Miss y’all.

🙂
